Day dedicated to Composition at the Conservatory

On April 29th, we had an afternoon filled with activities centered around Composition. It began with the first Audition of the Composition students from Prof. Pedro Louzeiro's class. This is a variant of the Secondary Music Course that we started this academic year and represents another important milestone in this school's journey. The young composers Tomás Guedes and Rafael de Almeida had the opportunity to hear their colleagues play some of their pieces. This moment featured a full house and the presence of a special guest, the illustrious composer Sérgio Azevedo — one of the greatest living references of composition in Portugal. Immediately following, the two students received the master's perspective and observations in a Composition Workshop, where they were able to work on and expand skills that will remain with them for the future.

Later, we continued with the second session of Rumo ao Palco: Cycle of musical conversations, which, on this day dedicated to composition, featured Sérgio Azevedo as a guest. Through a very interesting conversation, we learned more about this field, and, in a very summarized way, it can be said that composition is alive and well.

The day ended with the lecture-recital by flutist Marina Camponês and pianist Diana Botelho Vieira, through which they presented their recent recording “Histórias para uma flauta”. This CD brings together ten works by Portuguese composers suitable for different levels of the flutist's development, from beginner to advanced. As it is the first recording of most of the works, “Histórias para uma flauta” takes on a role of special relevance as a pedagogical reference for this instrument.

During the afternoon, flute and piano students also had the opportunity to work and develop skills with the two performers and teachers in masterclasses for each of the instruments.

A very special (long) afternoon filled with music!

Many thanks to everyone involved in organizing today's activities and a very special thank you to the Composer Sérgio Azevedo for the enormous generosity with which he gifted our students.
