The trombone is a brass aerophone, belonging to the brass family, which is structurally distinguished by the presence of a U-shaped slide (slide). This movable, telescopic section is integrated into a predominantly cylindrical bore tube (approximately two-thirds of its length) which ends in a conical bell. The sound is produced by the vibration of the musician's lips against a cup-shaped mouthpiece, a vibration that is transmitted and amplified by the air column inside the instrument.
Acoustically, the operating principle is based on the harmonic series. The movable slide, traditionally subdivided into seven positions, allows the instrumentalist to progressively lengthen the tube, lowering the fundamental pitch and chromatically filling the space between natural harmonics. This characteristic grants it the unique ability, among brass instruments, to perform perfect continuous glissandos.
Historically, the trombone descends from the sackbut (sacqueboute), developed in the mid-15th century from the medieval straight trumpet. Unlike most orchestral instruments, its morphology and fundamental acoustic principle (the slide) have remained remarkably unchanged since the Renaissance, not requiring the addition of valves during the 19th century to achieve full chromaticism, although valve versions were later developed for military bands.
