The tuba is a brass aerophone (made of brass) with a mouthpiece, which functions as the lowest-pitched member of the brass family in the symphony orchestra. Morphologically, it is characterized by a long tube with a predominantly conical bore, which gradually widens until it ends in an upward-facing bell. The sound is generated by the vibration of the player's lips against the cup-shaped mouthpiece, a vibration that is amplified by the air inside the instrument.

Acoustically, the long, conical tube favors the production of fundamental frequencies and lower harmonics, resulting in a deep, dark, and enveloping timbre. The valve system (which can vary between three and six, in rotary or piston format) allows the musician to alter the length of the tube in real time, filling the gaps between natural harmonics and enabling the performance of a complete chromatic scale in the low register.

Historically, the tuba is a relatively recent instrument. It was patented in 1835 by Wilhelm Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz, in Prussia, to replace the ophicleides and serpents in military bands, instruments that presented problems with intonation and projection. It was quickly adopted by 19th-century symphony orchestras, consolidating the brass section.
