The piano (originally called pianoforte) is a struck keyboard chordophone, invented in Florence by Bartolomeo Cristofori, around 1700. Its classical morphology (grand piano) is characterized by a robust wooden soundboard, which houses a heavy cast-iron frame. Stretched over this frame are dozens of steel strings (often crossed to save space and improve resonance), which can be single, double, or triple, depending on the high or low register of the note.

Acoustically, sound is produced through an extremely complex and ingenious mechanism: the "escapement". When a key is pressed, a felt-covered hammer is thrown against the corresponding strings, striking and instantly recoiling, allowing the strings to vibrate freely until the damper descends (upon releasing the key).

This mechanical innovation by Cristofori was revolutionary, as it solved the acoustic limitation of the harpsichord: it allowed the performer to control the dynamics of the sound (to play piano or forte, softly or aggressively) depending on the weight applied to the key. The piano became the central instrument of the Romantic period, demanding an unprecedented level of virtuosity in music history.
