The oboe is a double-reed woodwind aerophone, characterized by its conical bore tube and a slightly flared bell at its base. Its sound is produced by the passage of air through two thin cane reeds, tied to a small metal tube (called a staple), which is inserted into the upper end of the instrument.

Acoustically, the conical profile of the tube gives it the properties of an open tube, which allows it to overblow at the octave, distinguishing it from instruments with cylindrical bores. Its timbre is distinctly penetrating and nasal, being particularly rich in upper harmonics. This acoustic projection gives it a soloistic role of great orchestral prominence, being the instrument traditionally responsible for giving the tuning "A".

The morphology of the modern oboe results from a long structural evolution from the Renaissance shawm. Its initial classical form was consolidated in France, at the court of Louis XIV, around the mid-17th century. During the 19th century, its key mechanism was substantially complexified. The designated "conservatory system", brilliantly developed by the Triebert family in Paris, eventually consolidated definitively as the international constructive standard.
